Coffee-Rubbed NY Strip Steak

A savory, smoky steak with a rich crust and deep flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 (12 oz) NY strip steak
  • 1 tbsp avocado oil
  • 1 tsp finely ground coffee
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp butter (optional)

Steps

  1. Pat steak dry.
  2. Mix coffee, brown sugar, paprika, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  3. Rub steak with olive oil, then coat evenly with the coffee rub.
  4. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. Cook steak 4–5 minutes per side for medium-rare, or to desired doneness.
  6. Add butter in the last minute, if using, and spoon over steak.
  7. Rest 5 minutes before serving.

Key Tips for Success:

  • Prevent Burning: The sugar can burn, so keep a close eye on the sear and ensure the heat is not too high (medium-high is usually best).
  • Use Fine Grounds: Use very finely ground coffee or espresso powder to prevent a gritty texture.
